Who will not feel perplexed after graduating? Compared with academic qualifications, certificates, and experience, it seems that fresh graduates are not as competitive as other people.

Maybe you were confused, or maybe you are now in perplexity; then, you should listen to the VIP character, Patch Yang, I interviewed in this issue. When he was a student, he didn’t focus much on academic or career planning, but spent most of his time in dancing, dancing, and dancing. However, 10 years later, he is now the manager of a Singaporean company. He said, “In fact, he has never changed one thing along the way, that is……”

Let’s listen to Patch’s exclusive sharing of “Career Planning”! Welcome to watch this seminar video👉Youtube channel: Irene Dream Workshop

Can you make a brief introduction of yourself?

Patch Yang:

I was in the Department of Finance for studies. My classmates would basically choose the securities industry or insurance industry for career development, but at the time I chose to work for the accounting firm because I think it’s an entry voucher to industry. I first learned the tax planning to the audit part in the firm. After that, I entered the listed company and then made my own business of angel investment with others. At that time, we also visited many countries, like Singapore, Malaysia Johor Bahru, Thailand Bangkok, China Guangzhou, Hong Kong…

On my career path, if you asked that if I had a clear idea of my career choices when I was studying at school, I would say no. However, I only know one thing: You must invest in yourself! You have to make your value match the salary you get, including your expectations of yourself and your vision for the future. This will set a big direction of what a person’s thinking and pattern of everything.

From the beginning until now I’ve served as the Manager for Finance & Corporate Services in Singapore-based offshore wind power company; actually, I haven’t changed any direction along the way.

When you were studying, did you know what industry you want to go after graduation?

Patch Yang:

In fact, throwing back to the time at school, I was not a student who was very serious about my studies, because I had another identity as a member of the Taiwanese street dance group. At that time, I concentrated on competitions, including preparation for dancing. Whether it was after class or lunch time, I sacrificed all my time to dance.

But in fact, dancing has changed me a lot, because we dance with a sentence: how much you give, how much you gain! But if you don’t pay, there is nothing.

I am a junior college student in Taiwan. I didn’t go to university or a master’s degree. All the things I do along the way is just focus on one thing: invest in yourself! No matter what you choose, do it hard!

Did you take any financial-related certificates when studying at junior college?

Patch Yang:

I didn’t do this at the time, so when I just graduated looking for a job, I was nervous. I can still remember clearly that I spent 23 days looking for a job, because I threw 20 resumes every morning for those 23 days. Until the 23rd day, a firm gave me a chance. And then, I entered the workplace and started to learn.

Did your first job after graduation meet your expectations?

Patch Yang:

When I was looking for a job, my mind was actually very simple. I only hoped that I can have an opportunity to contribute my time and learn at every job moment. So my first job, to be honest, it was a job with a low salary and very long working hours. We worked until 23:00 and 00:00 sometimes.

In fact, in the process of my every job change, I wouldn’t choose for the condition of high pay particularly, but I would choose whether this place would allow me to learn and grow! Money has 4 feet, and people have 2 feet. If you keep chasing money, you will never catch up. Even if you catch it, you may be exhausted and have no energy to enjoy that kind of blessing. However, when you have value, let the money run after you, so that you can enjoy the fruits of your own hard work.

Did you get the offer of one of the four major global firms in your last job?

Patch Yang:

At that time, I entered Deloitte and was quite happy because there is a feeling that you are recognized. In fact, after entering, you’ll gradually understand whether you’re fit or not, including the sense of accomplishment can get in this job. After I made up my direction, I entered the industry again, which is the global company right now.

No matter what kind of industry you are in, you need to understand the time point & historical background, and what you can do to meet the time, place, people and achieve the stage you want.

What kind of characteristics can make the interviewer recognize and promote you?

Patch Yang:

If the company is willing to invite you in for an interview with your resume, the first key lies in your ability to express yourself. You can imagine yourself as a product, how do you express this product, how do you position it and shape yourself? It’s very important to invest in your hard skill and soft skill.

Next is your professional ability, because you have a good expression ability before you can express how professional you are and how hard-core your professional ability is.

After you have professional abilities, the third is on-the-spot adaptability. No matter in any interview process, the interviewers will always have their own opinions and ideas. How do you answer them? I think this also requires training.

How do I know what I like and what is suitable for me?

Patch Yang:

What you like and what is suitable is based on “deep working.” When you are not in a deep working state for a job, you will never be enthusiastic about it. To generate enthusiasm, the first is mainly based on whether this matter can give you a sense of accomplishment. After you have a sense of accomplishment, you will have enthusiasm for this matter. After you have enthusiasm, you will feel that you are suitable for this job.

If I am interested in many fields and want to do many things. How to allocate and plan them?

Patch Yang:

When I first entered the workplace, I was nearly 21 years old. I highly recommend that you try more in the 20s so that you will know what suits you. But in the process of trying, don’t spend too much time on trying all the time. Relatively you have to do deletions and subtractions gradually to find those that really belong to you!

Are you still studying or training after work?

Patch Yang:

Everyone’s time is not really no time, but how much you want to learn, how self-disciplined you are, because you have to be the master of your time, then you can really know how to allocate your time.

Do you have any short-term or long-term goals? Or is there any motivation that drives you to actively plan yourself?

Patch Yang:

I used to be a person who likes to set goals, but my goal is more like a general goal. For example, I learn Russian because I want to do something after learning it, but can I really do it in the future? There’s no exact answer. However, because of plans, no matter whether you can meet the standards and really do what you want, I think it doesn’t matter much, because you get more in the process of learning. Perhaps you may want to go this way, but when you move forward, you take another better way!

Patch’s performance in 2018

In fact, many people will be engaged in a certain field when graduating in their 20s, but this field may not be suitable for you or what you like, so there will be a conversion process in the middle, and every conversion process is to expect the next better one.

Wish you all work hard to create your own life and invest more time in yourself, because 20s is an important stage of career planning. If you don’t grasp this period, how can you use your talents after 30s!
